Where was I in 1990 when they aired the show The New Adventures of He-Man? In 2006/2007 they released all the episodes in two separate box sets. I bought them trying to complete the Masters of the Universe box set DVD's (Even though I neglected buying the She Ra collection which finishes the mural all the box sets make). I remember popping in the first disc when I first got Volume one and being totally disgusted. I think the way they drew Skeletor was the reason why. I wound up putting back on the shelf and not paying it any mind.
The other day I had some nasty virus going on and all laid up and wanted to watch something that I've been neglecting and I decided to give this series another chance. The story line is pretty basic. There's trouble in the future so they decide to turn to the past and find a great warrior to help them. When these warriors ( They look like two of the characters from the Centurions mind you) from the future first enter the past they run into Skeletors Minions (New characters, none of your favorite MOTU villains). They bring the future characters Hydron and Flipshot to Skeletor and tell him their dilemma. Skeletor then decides to lie to them saying he is the good guy and they all proceed to head back to the future. While opening the portal He-Man shows up and proved that he is the good guy and they all head back to the future in which Skeletor teams up with the Evil Mutants and He-Man stay on Primus to protect that Planet.
The stories started getting better so far even though it seems like they rip a lot of things off. There's bad guys that look like Storm Troopers. There's a episode with characters kind of like the Tribbles from Star Trek and the opening and closing scenes kind of reming me of a mixture of Thundercats (He-Man welding the sword kind of like Lion O) and the scene with the mutant ship looked like the opener from Starcom. Even though a few episodes in they changed Skeletors Green face with Eyeballs to his normal Yellow skull face but added giant red eye balls at least gave him more of a classic look. I still got a lot of episodes to go through ... probably another 50 so there is most likely a lot more I could nit pick at. It's obvious why this version didn't go as far as the original Masters of the Universe series. If they rehashed it and made it a bit more darker and the villains not as silly it wouldn't be half bad.
All I can wait for is the New Masters of the Universe movie I keep hearing about.
